WISE — Despite being down by a two-goal margin early on in the first period, UVA Wise held their ground and pierced in two goals from Caitlyn Schultz in the fourth to hold on to the 13-12 victory on their home turf on Saturday.
The win secured a 6-3 overall record and their second in the conference. Anderson fell to 7-4 overall and took their second conference loss of the season.
Alicia Cannon and Gwen Ontiveros of the Trojans jumped to a 2-0 lead by the 9:30 mark before Logan Davis and Schultz teamed up to even the score.
Three minutes later, Anderson heaved in three consecutive goals to give the Trojans a 5-2 advantage. In the last seconds of the first, Abby Stoffelen threw in an unassisted goal to lessen the Trojan edge — putting the score at 5-3 going into the second.
The Trojans jumped out with a goal to start the second, but soon got a taste of their own medicine as Kaila Lacey sparked a three-goal unanswered rally to tie the game at 6 all.
The rest of the contest featured back-to-back scoring from each squad, featuring five more tied scores.
In the fourth, Schultz worked her magic and drove in two goals to catapult the Cavs to a 13-11 lead with 3:22 left to go. Alicia Cannon of the Trojans drove in a goal with a 1:14 to go, but Cavalier defense would hold true to a 13-12 triumph.
Schultz' day was highlighted by six caused turnovers (a career-high), five groundballs, and four goals. Stoffelen joined in with two caused turnovers of her own, three groundballs, and three goals. Ashley Fisher also joined in on Cavalier scoring with two goals while Issie Brown, Davis, and Lacey paced the Cavs with a goal each.
