CAVS SWIPE ONE FROM CONCORD

ATHENS, W.VA. — In their first games back in action since Feb. 10 due to weather, UVA Wise snagged game two in mercy-rule fashion, 12-4, of the twin bill against the Concord Mountain Lions on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

GAME 1:
In a low-scoring affair to start action in game one, Concord (2-9) and UVA Wise (2-6) held each other at a deadlock for four and a half innings with McKenna Falwell leading the defensive effort in the circle. Despite a nine hit performance from the Cavaliers highlighted by a 3-for-3 Kara Long show in the leadoff spot, Concord's bats found a spark in the bottom of the fifth.

Megan Gleason started off the inning with a single to right center to pace the Mountain Lions before Falwell swiped back-to-back strikeouts for the Cavaliers. UVA Wise hit a snag after Imani Campbell drew a walk that out runners on first and second. A wild pitch would advance the runners up before Lacie Lewis poked a two-run single to mark the first runs of the day. Nancy-Jo Roberts would just barely hold off Cavalier offense from the circle to seal the 2-0 Concord win.

GAME 2:

Concord struck first yet again in game two after a leadoff single from Lewis turned into a run after Sarah Thompson dribbled an infield grounder to score her. Alivia Nolley in the circle for the Cavaliers recovered and retired the side after producing two strikeouts.

Led by a trio of two-hit showings from Sarah BarrettHayley Duckett, and Falwell, the Cavaliers responded and found success early in the top of the second after a two-run single from Falwell.

Despite an RBI single from Campbell in the bottom of the second to tie the ballgame, the Cavaliers erupted in the third after a Concord error and four hits pushed the score to 7-2.

UVA Wise's offensive charge kept rolling in the top of the fifth. Highlighted by a Brie Frazier RBI double and a two-run single from Abagail Mills, the Cavaliers had taken the game by the ropes with a 12-4 lead.

In a last-chance effort from Concord, the Mountain Lions grabbed a hit but couldn't get a run to home plate finalizing the 12-4 mercy rule Cavalier triumph.

Falwell led offensively, smacking 4 RBI in the victory. AS a team, the Cavaliers produced 10 hits.

Nolley held the Mountain Lions to only five hits. She whipped up two strikeouts in five innings pitched.
