CAVS WOMEN FINISH A WEEKEND SPLIT ON A HIGH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WISE/SALEM, Va. - Highland Cavalier women's tennis wrapped up a roller coaster weekend of play with a Saturday loss against Milligan University and a Sunday victory over Roanoke College.

Saturday's match saw the Cavs suffer their first defeat of the season, 7-0, on a cold and windy day in Wise.

The lone bright spot on the day came in doubles play, as the sophomore duo of Antonella Campodonico and Constanca Azinhaga accounted for the lone match win for UVA Wise.

The Cavs were swept in singles play as their dreams of a perfect season came to a close. Campodonico played well in her defeat, pushing freshman opponent Marta Miralles to the limit in a match that finished in a long third set: 4-6, 6-3, and 10-7.

After a disappointing display on Saturday the Cavs were no doubt looking for a bounce back performance on Sunday in Salem, Va. Not only did the women from UVA Wise bounce back on the road, they did so in immaculate fashion, winning 7-0.

The Cavs secured the day's doubles point in a 6-2 victory courtesy of junior Sara Nichols and freshman Kinsey Knox.

As the day progressed into singles play UVA Wise established their dominance over Roanoke. The Cavs won each of the six singles matches in straight sets.

Sophomore Lucy Cunliffe stepped up in match one and defeated Maroons sophomore Lia Streibich, 6-2 and 6-4. In match two it was more of the same, as Antonella Campodonico dispatched senior Halle Fernstrum, 6-3 and 6-4.

Match three saw the Cavs most dominant performance at the hands of Constanca Azinhaga as she quickly took care of business against freshman Bella Gustafson, 6-0 and 6-0. Match four saw the same result by much different means; it was easily the tightest contest of the day. Junior Emily Conn defeated fellow junior Julia Bassett, 7-6(7-5) and 6-3.

With Sunday's victory already guaranteed the Cavs could have taken it easy in the final contests of the day. UVA Wise did no such thing. Kinsey Knox defeated sophomore Zane Maiden in match five, 6-1 and 6-0. Freshman Abiela Wang defeated fellow freshman Sidney Wright, 6-0 and 6-1, to polish off a perfect day for women's tennis.

The Cavs, now 4-1, next action will have them back on the road in Knoxville, Tenn. to take on Johnson University at 12 p.m. on Oct. 14.
