WISE, VA — Head Coach Alyssa Hanley will debut her UVA Wise head coaching career in the David J. Prior Convocation Center on Saturday, Aug. 27 at noon as her team faces non-conference opponent Bluefield State.

NOTES ON UVA WISE
- UVA Wise finished the 2021 campaign with a 4-22 overall mark and were selected to finish 12th in this year's South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- The Cavaliers bring in nine new faces — seven freshman: Piper Suddeth, Bailey Conner, Kamryn Livingston, Makayla Rumley, Morgan Blankenship, Kinley Norris, and Charlee Hobbs; and two transfers — Lily Gutierrez (Emmanuel College) and Lauren Montes (Schreiner University).
- Leaders of the Cavs pack from last season include lone senior Adison Minor who led the team in kills (194) and was second in blocks (33). Junior Cassidy Farley led the team in blocks on the year (77) and was ranked third on the team in kills (119).
- Leading the eight-player sophomore class is
Morgan Blevins, who recorded 106 kills in her freshman campaign.
- Fellow sophomores
Kaylee Scarce and
Cana Davidson will add to the defensive effort, ranking third and fourth on the team in digs (178, 135) from the 2021 season.
NOTES ON BLUEFIELD STATE
- Head coach Savanna Hammond of the Big Blue go into the UVA Wise matchup optimistic with a season-opening 3-1 win against Johnson & Wales on Thursday.
-Bluefield State finished the 2021 season with an even 12-12 record as a DII-Independent institution
-Bluefield State brings in seven new freshman to their squad (Blaker, Dalak, Neal, Martin, Duncan, Winchell, and Cox) making up over half of their 15-player roster.
- Players to watch from the Big Blue include sophomore Kateryna Dashevska who led the 2021 season in kills (362), digs (293), and aces (41); and Veronica Butler who was the team leader in assists (318).
HISTORY
-The last matchup between UVA Wise and Bluefield State was Sept. 27, 2018, where the Cavs won 3-0 (25-4, 25-3, 25-8).
- The Cavs have an overall 8-1 record over the Big Blue, spanning from Sept. 21, 2011.
