WISE - - Daniel Bagwell tossed 8 1/3 innings of relief to lead Queens to a 5-4 South Atlantic Conference baseball win over UVA Wise at Stallard Field Friday.
UVA WISE PLATES THREE IN THE FIRST
UVA Wise (18-30, 6-16 SAC) jumped out to an early lead with a trio of unearned runs. Hunter Meador lined a run-scoring single before D'Sean Prinkleton knocked in a pair.
While Prinkleton's two-run single staked the Cavaliers to a 3-0 lead, it would knock out Queens; (27-20, 15-7 SAC) starting pitcher Jeff Maidhof who was injured on the play backing up home.
ROYALS CUT INTO DEFICIT
In the second, back-to-back one-out hits from MJ Sasapan and Mason Pickard set the stage for a two-run double off the bat of Carter Foster cutting the lead to one. UVA Wise  hurler Garrett Stiltner would get out of the jam by inducing a groundout and a flyout.
CAVS TACK ON ONE
Brandon Costa's team scored a run in the third as Hunter Meador led off the frame with a hit before a bunt single from Prinkleton put two on with none out. Clay Taylor would deliver a run-scoring single to make it a 4-2 affair.
While the Cavs scored, it would go down as a missed opportunity as Bagwell would retire the next three hitters to escape the jam.
QUEENS SCORES IN THE FOURTH
Pickard doubled to lead off the inning and later came around to score on a Cheek Riley single to make it a 4-3 game.
RILEY TIES IT
The score remain unchanged until Riley led off the seventh inning with a solo homer. The Royals would threaten to take the lead in the inning but, Cav reliever Ryan Whitson would strand a pair of base runners.
WILD PITCH
Queens put runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth inning when a wild pitch allowed Pickard to scamper home with the go-ahead run. It would be all the Royals would get as Hunter Anderson would record the final out to keep it a one-run contest.
CAVS GET WINNING RUN TO PLATE
In the home ninth, a two-out single from DJ Dickson would get Tyler Campbell to the plate representing the potential winning run. Bagwell would be up to the task as he would fan Campbell, securing the victory for the visitors.
