STILTNER'S MASTERPIECE PROPELS CAVS TO SERIES OPENING WIN

WISE - - UVA Wise (15-28, 4-15 SAC) right-hander Garrett Stiltner crafted the best pitching performance of his collegiate career in his club's 1-0 South Atlantic Conference win over Limestone (4-39, 1-21 SAC) at Stallard Field Friday. The Johnson City, Tenn. product fired a complete-game three-hit shutout and did not allow a runner to advance past second base in the 125-pitch effort.

LIMESTONE GETS EARLY BASE RUNNER

Brandon Billesberger led off the game with an infield single and later stole second base. It would be as close as the Saints would get to scoring all night. Stiltner would retire the next three men to hang a zero in the opening frame.

PITCHER'S DUEL ENSUES

Limestone hurler Cory Busse would match Stiltner zero-for-zero through the game's first five innings. Stiltner would retire 10 consecutive hitters after the leadoff base hit before issuing a walk in the fourth. The threat would quickly be erased as he picked off Clark Burroughs.

Busse would strand single base runners in the second, third and fourth innings before retiring the side in order in the fifth.

UVA WISE BREAKS THROUGH

Justin Reed and Tyler Campbell lined back-to-back singles before DJ Dickson doubled in the game's lone run in the sixth inning.

ANOTHER PICK OFF

Burroughs would single with an out in the seventh. Stiltner promptly picked off Burroughs to again wiggle out of the jam.

HOETH COMES UP BIG IN THE NINTH

The Saints would get a base runner with a one-out walk from Pete Adams. Adams would then attempt to steal second but would be thrown out by Cavalier catcher Kyle Hoeth leaving Stiltner an out away from winning.

STILTNER FINISHES WHAT HE STARTED

Following a two-out single, Stiltner would induce a flyout off the bat of Dylan Shugan to complete the win.

BOX SCORE NOTES

Stiltner struck out seven and walked two as he improved to 3-5 on the season. Bret Roberts and Dickson had three hits each to lead an eight-hit attack for the Cavs.

With the win, UVA Wise has now tripled its win total from 2021 with its 15 victory of the season.
