MARS HILL, N.C. - - Clay Taylor went 3-for-4 and reached base safely four times to lead a UVA Wise offense that pounded out 11 hits in a 10-3 South Atlantic Conference win over Mars Hill at Anderson Field Friday.
BIG INNING CAVS
Mars Hill led 1-0 going to the top of the second inning before UVA Wise put up its first of two big innings on the day. Taylor started the frame with a base hit before a single by Gavin Birkhimer and a walk to Kyle Hoeth loaded the bases. Bret Roberts would work a lengthy at bat and turn it into a bases loaded walk to tie the game before JoJo Kelliher singled home two to put Brandon Costa's team up 3-1.
The score would remain unchanged until the fifth inning when the visitors put up another crooked number on the scoreboard. Cole Harness led off that inning with a base hit and after Justin Reed reached on an error, Taylor stepped to the plate with a chance to do damage. He did just that with a two-run double to left centerfield plating both Harness and Reed to put the Cavaliers in front 5-1. It would be the first of two extra-base hits in the inning as Hoeth later produced a two-run triple to make it a 7-1 affair.
LIONS MOUNT COMEBACK BID
A Kyle Jenkins triple would plate Jordan Lathe to make it a 7-2 contest in the fifth before Jenkins would later come home on a base hit in the frame. While the lead was cut to four, it would be all the damage the Lions could muster as UVA Wise hurler Garrett Stiltner strikeout a pair of hitters and induce a fly out to get out of trouble.
PLAYING ADD-ON
The Cavs would add a single run in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Jude Drzemiecki. Tyler Campbell's seventh homer of the year in the eighth inning plated a ninth run before Drzemiecki came home with the 10th run on an error in the ninth.
BOX SCORE NOTES
The win was the fifth of the year for UVA Wise who has already matched its win total from last season. Stiltner earned the mound win by striking out seven over seven innings of work. The right-hander scattered seven hits but did not allow a walk in picking up his first win of the season before Ryan Whitson fired two perfect frames of relief.
Hoeth reached base four times in the game as he walked three times in addition to his triple. Taylor (3), Harness (2) and Campbell (2) all had a multi-hit game.
