GAME NOTES: CAVS PLAY NO.12 RANKED RAILSPLITTERS

COMPLETE GAME NOTES

UVA WISE NOTES

The UVA Wise Cavaliers are off to a strong start in South Atlantic Conference play, as the Cavaliers were able to snag a win against then no. 21-ranked Anderson on March 3rd in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Jenna McDermott, who is third in the league in batting average, stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and drilled a walkoff home run to right centerfield to get the 3-2 win. Due to her impressive offensive outing, sophomore McDermott earned herself SAC Astroturf Softball Player of the Week. Last week, the Townsend, Del., native averaged a .545 batting average, going 4-for-11 from the plate with a 1.455 slugging percentage, five RBI's, six runs scored and two home runs.

The Cavaliers took on their second SAC opponent, Wingate, on Tuesday, and struggled to get past strong Bulldog bats. In Game 1, the Bulldogs pieced together a six run rally in the fifth inning that the Cavaliers couldn't come back from. In Game 2, the Cavaliers suffered the same fate in the second inning as a one-out double from Bulldog Sara Brooks brought in three runs.

Coming back from an away trip, the Cavaliers look to bounce back and add to their SAC victories against another nationally-ranked squad in Lincoln Memorial.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL NOTES

Lincoln Memorial (LMU) opens up conference play against the Cavs on March 11, as they've only played non-conference opponents since the start of their season on February 6. Overall, the squad's record sits at 17-5. On March 8, it was  announced that the Railsplitters are ranked 12th in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll — one of three SAC schools to make the cut (alongside Carson-Newman and Anderson). This comes as no surprise to most, as the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters went 20-4 in Conference play while going 38-8 overall last season.

In the overall series with UVA Wise, the Railsplitters lead 10-5. In their most recent matchup on April 23, 2021, LMU took the win by a score of 6-2 in the SAC Quarterfinals.
