WISE, VA — The UVA Wise softball team plays their home opener against non-conference opponent Bluefield State tomorrow, Feb. 9. Start times at Cavalier Field for the doubleheader are 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.

Notes on UVA Wise:
- The UVA Wise softball team launched their 2022 season against the Converse Valkyries in Spartanburg, S.C. last weekend, securing two non-conference wins by scores of 14-4 and 3-0.
- Sophomore Jenna McDermott snagged seven RBIs in game 1, and picked up her first grand-slam of her career
- Senior Kaylee Jones surpassed 100 RBIs in her career (9th softball player to do so in program history) and picked up two homers in game 2 (her second multi-home run game in her career)
- Game 2 saw senior Sydney Collins pitch a complete game shutout, strike out nine hitter, and allow just two base runners.
Notes on Bluefield State:
- The Bluefield State Big Blues will begin their 2022 season against the Cavaliers. In the 2021 season, The Big Blues went 0-20, but only competed in two conference games against Alice Lloyd. The Eagles outscored Bluefield State 31-3.
- Bluefield State brings back seven returners and pulls in nine new faces
- Leading the 2022 pack in batting is sophomore Kylie Nelson who ranked second on the team in batting average (.289) and fourth in slugging percentage (.316)
History
- The last matchup between UVA Wise and Bluefield State was March 4, 2020 in Bluefield, W.V., and the Cavs won, 9-1. In the overall series, the Cavs are 4-0, outscoring the Big Blues 53-1.
