CAVS BATTLE BUT FALL TO EAGLES

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - In what was a non-conference game that featured a pair of South Atlantic Conference schools, it was host Carson-Newman who came out on top in a wild 16-12 baseball contest at the Silver Diamond Tuesday.

EAGLES GRAB BIG LEAD EARLY

Carson-Newman scored five times with two outs in the home second to take an early 5-0 lead. The big blast in the frame came off the bat of Henry Jackson when he launched a three-run homer.

CAVALIER RESPONSE

A half inning later, UVA Wise cut the deficit to two as Hunter Meador lined a run-scoring double and Cole Harness belted a two-run homer to make it a 5-3 affair.

CROOKED NUMBERS

The Eagles would seemingly put the game out of reach with a seven-run fourth inning. Ryan Potts delivered the big blow in the inning with a three-run homer as part of an inning that put CN up 12-3.

UVA Wise answered with a seven-run inning of its own in the sixth. Clay Taylor and Kyle Hoeth each had RBI hits in the frame while Tyler Campbell lined a three-run homer and Justin Reed added a solo shot as part of the big inning.

TYING IT UP

With rain pouring down, the Cavaliers would tie the game in the seventh on a two-run blast off the bat of Shyhiem Pannell as the visitors tied the game after once trailing by nine.

CN BACK TO THE FRONT

The Eagles would score two in the home seventh thanks to a pair of hits and a UVA Wise error before putting the game away with two more in the eighth when Jackson lined a two-run single with two outs.

BOX SCORE NUGGETS

A total of 15 pitchers were used and the teams combined for 28 hits. Taylor, Meador, Campbell and Pannell all had two hits each for UVA Wise. The Cavs lined five extra-base hits in the contest but Eagles pitching fanned 15.

UP NEXT

League play begins this weekend for Brandon Costa's team as the Cavs travel to Coker to begin a three-game weekend set with the Cobras.
