EMORY, Va. - - Nickelsville, Va. native Justin Reed belted a pair of homers for UVA Wise in game two to aid his school to a non-conference baseball doubleheader split with Emory & Henry College Sunday. The Cavaliers won the series finale 9-6 after dropping game one 13-3 to win the three-game weekend set two games to one.
WINNING THE SERIES
Brandon Costa's team jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Emory & Henry would bat in the series finale. Tyler Campbell singled home Clay Taylor before Reed blasted a 3-run homer to put the visitors in front.
WASPS RESPOND
A two-out, three-run homer off the bat of Sean Davis-Cherry would cut the deficit to 4-3 after two innings of play.
PITCHING AND DEFENSE
The score would remain unchanged thanks to the pitching of UVA Wise's Connor McKeehan and Emory & Henry's Justin Day until the top of the sixth. McKeehan would strikeout four while allowing six hits over five innings of work to earn the mound win while Day fanned four and surrendered six hits for the Wasps.
BUSTING IT OPEN
In the top of the sixth, Reed lined a two-run homer before Hunter Meador singled home Kyle Hoeth to push the Cavs' lead to 7-3. An inning later, Shyheim Pannell plated two more as his run-scoring hit plated Reed and Hoeth to make it a 9-3 contest.
WRAPPING IT UP
The Wasps would get a three-run homer off the bat of Hayden Miley but would be unable to do anything else en route to losing the rubber game of the series.
GAME ONE
Emory & Henry led wire-to-wire to even the series at a game each after UVA Wise won on Saturday 16-14. The Wasps took a 7-1 lead after three innings of play thanks to three RBI from first baseman McCray Sawyers.
UVA Wise received a solo homer from JoJo Kelliher, an RBI hit from Cole Harness and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Gavin Birkhimer in the loss.
As a team, Emory & Henry lined 15 hits while Wasps' pitching fanned seven Cavs. Will Clark earned the mound win allowing a pair of earned runs over six innings of work with Hayden Miley leading the offensive effort with a four-hit day.
SERIES NOTES
UVA Wise has won 16 of its last 17 meetings against Emory & Henry. The Wasps have not won a baseball series against the Cavs since March 29, 2000.
