EMORY, VA- In a game that featured 30 runs, 32 hits and six errors, it was UVA Wise that came out on top 16-14 over Southwest Virginia rival Emory & Henry College in non-conference baseball action Saturday. The game was the first of a three-game series between the future South Atlantic Conference foes.
CAVS BUST OUT EARLY
Tyler Campbell belted a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning to put Brandon Costa's club out front in the first meeting between the rivals since Feb. 28, 2012. Emory and Henry responded with a run in the home first before a four-run second frame that was highlighted by a three-run Campbell homer staked the guests to a 7-1 advantage.
UVA Wise would push the lead to 9-1 after 2 ½ innings on an RBI single by Jude Drzemieck and an RBI groundout from Cole Harness.
SWAPPING RUNS
E&H countered with a three-run third to make it a 9-4 game before RBI hits from JoJo Kelliher and Campbell highlighted a four-run fourth frame to put the Cavaliers in front 13-4. An inning later, Costa's crew seemingly put the game out of reach with the three-run top of the fifth, In the inning, Kyle Hoeth had an RBI hit while Clay Taylor doubled home a pair to make it a 16-4 affair.
Once more, the Wasps answered back. E&H would plate seven runs thanks to two walks, a hit by pitch, two errors and a passed ball to make the game 16-11.
E&H GETS IT CLOSE
Kevin Anderson would double home two in the seventh before a single run in the eighth made it 16-14 going to the ninth. UVA Wise reliever Nash Bingham would load the bases with two outs before getting a strikeout to preserve the victory.
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
Campbell finished 4-for-6 with two runs in addition to his six RBI while Hoeth went 3-for-4 with a quartet of runs scored to pace the UVA Wise offense. Gavin Birkhimer and Kelliher added two hits each for the Cavs.

The series concludes with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12 p.m. Each game is slated for seven innings.
