WISE, VA — The Cavaliers were unsuccessful in their rematch against Emory & Henry this evening, falling 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-22)
The first set saw a strong performance right out the jump from the Wasps (2-16, 2-8 SAC) as Carley Williams and Julissa Hopgood went back-to-back in kills. The Cavs (4-10, 1-9 SAC) found their groove later in the match though, as Kaylee Scarce dropped down two kills in a row to snag a lead.
As each squad went point-by-point, UVA Wise went on a six-point run to secure a 22-18 lead — but Emory & Henry controlled the last seven of eight points in the match to sneak by with a 26-24 victory.
It would be another Wasps run in the second set that made all the difference for the Wasps as six Cavalier miscues and three Emory & Henry kills gave way for a 15-13 lead. Although Morgan Blevins got hot with two late consecutive kills, but Emory & Henry's Hannah Watson put down the final kill for a 25-22 win.
In the third set, both squads were hot on the attack with .383 and .289 hitting percentages, respectively. Each team were within one point at a 20-19 score before Emory & Henry finally broke through the Cavalier grip and took a 25-22 win.
Scarce and Bailey Conner led the Cavs with 11 kills each, as Julia Hopgood led the Wasps with 11 of her own.
Piper Suddeth led with 19 assists and Scarce also led in the digs category with 17.
Up next, the Cavs play Newberry on the road on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 PM.
