NEWBERRY, S.C. - Despite an impressive career-high 22 kill, 16 dig double-double performance from sophomore Kaylee Scarce, UVA Wise fell in four sets to the Wolves tonight by a score of 3-1 (27-25, 17-25, 22-25, 15-25).
The Cavaliers (4-11, 1-10 SAC) found themselves going back and forth with Newberry (8-11, 3-7 SAC) but took control in the first set with a four-point run to take an 18-13 lead. Although a hefty effort from Wolves' Baylor Herlehy tied the set late at 24 each, Morgan Blevins and Scarce teamed up to secure the 27-25 tight win.
The Wolves and the Cavs struggled to pull away from each other in the second set until the midway mark, as Newberry's Taylor Hall encouraged a five-point run to put her squad up 17-11. The combined power of Morgan Blankenship, Dannah Persinger and Scarce allowed UVA Wise to get within one point before Newbery scored the last seven points of the set unanswered to snag a 25-17 win.
Once again, each squad struggled to make any leads in the third set. With scores dead at 17 each, Paige Patrick of the Wolves threw down a kill that would set a game-changing five-point run in motion to seal a 25-22 Newberry win.
Regardless of a tough six-kill fourth set performance from Scarce, Newberry took over with two late convincing rallies and held the Cavs to 15 points.
Scarce's 22 kills against Newberry doubles her previous career high from 2021 (11 kills vs. Fayetteville State).
Lily Gutierrez left her mark with a leading-21 assists on the night while Persinger stuffed three blocks.
The Cavs are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 8 as they face Anderson with a 2:00 p.m. start.
