WISE, VA — In the program's first conference win since Oct. 20, 2018, the UVA Wise volleyball team took down the Coker Cobras in sweeping- 3-0 fashion (25-19, 25-23, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon in the Prior Center with Head Coach Alyssa Hanley at the helm.
"I am so happy for this team," Hanley said. "We have had a lot of challenges this year, so I am proud of how they have been able to bounce back from them. This team deserves this."
The Cavaliers (4-9, 1-8 SAC) displayed dominance right out the gate as a 10-point lead led by the trio of Bailey Conner, Kaylee Scarce and Cassidy Farley held the Cobras (4-12, 1-9 SAC) to a 14-4 score. Soon after, Coker gained momentum and mustered a six-point unanswered run led by Alexis Kopicki to keep UVA Wise on their toes. Although Coker kept within six points in the end, the effort was thwarted by Scarce on the attack and led to a 25-19 Cavalier win.
In the second, the Cobras were able to hold their ground — forcing nine lead changes in the set. Coker's Nehemiah Jinks commanded a hefty rally in the middle of the set to put the Cobras at their largest lead of the day (19-14) and forced the Cavs to a timeout.
Out of the break, five Cobra errors and two high-profile blocks from Farley put UVA Wise back in the driver's seat at a 22-20 score. Coker put the pressure back on, but kills from Morgan Blankenship and Scarce whipped up a 25-23 second set win.
In the third set, UVA Wise revved up a 7-2 early lead thanks to four Cobra miscues and slams from Scarce, Lily Gutierrez and Lauren Montes.
From there, the Cavaliers never lost the lead and recorded a season-high .300 hitting percentage to guarantee the 25-16 third set win.
The win over Coker puts an end to 1,442 day winless stint in conference for UVA Wise volleyball.
In the victory, Farley put up a season-high nine blocks while teammate Scarce threw down a conference match-high 12 kills and a .212 hitting percentage.
Coker's Taylor Hills led her squad with seven kills on the day while Chelsey Blume put up four blocks.
The Cavaliers are back in action on their home court as they face the Emory & Henry Wasps in a rematch slated for Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:00 PM.
