On Tuesday, Jan. 4, Director of Athletics Kendall Rainey announced Alyssa Hanley as the new head volleyball coach at UVA Wise.
Â
"I am excited to welcome Coach Hanley to the UVA Wise family," said Dr. Rainey. "Coach Hanley is a strong leader who identifies with our mission of growing student-athletes within the game as well as off the court. Her foundational knowledge and experiences in addition to her passion for NCAA DII make her a great fit to lead our volleyball program."
Â
Hanley, a native of Denton, Texas, comes to UVA Wise after five seasons as head volleyball coach at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.
Â
Hanley more than tripled the Shreiner volleyball team's wins each season she was head coach, and qualified for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) tournament in Spring 2020 for the first time in over eight years. In addition, Hanley produced at least one All-SCAC selection athlete each season.
Â
Prior to her coaching career at Schreiner, Hanley was a graduate assistant at Concord University where she graduated with a master's degree in Health Promotion. Alongside earning her degree, Hanley helped produce three All-Mountain East Conference (MEC) selections as well as collect 18 wins, which is the most wins for the program since 2002.
Â
On top of her illustrious coaching career at Concord and Shreiner, Hanley spent one year as assistant coach at Missouri Southern State University during the 2016-2017 volleyball season. At Missouri Southern State, Hanley aided in coaching five Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Honor Roll selections and one Honorable Mention selection, as well as tripled the program's wins from the 2015-2016 season.
Â
Â
Hanley's knowledge of volleyball comes from her collegiate volleyball experiences at the Division-I and Division-II level, playing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for her freshman year, and then transferring to West Texas A&M. Hanley graduated from West Texas A&M with a bachelor's in Mass Communications and a minor in Business Administration.
Â
"I am honored and excited to become the next head volleyball Coach at UVA Wise," Hanley said of her position. "From the moment I stepped onto campus and met all the amazing people, I knew it would be a great fit. I would like to thank Dr. [Donna] Henry, Kendall Rainey, and everyone on the hiring committee for this incredible opportunity!"
Â
Hanley will begin her position on Monday, January 31, and will coach her first season in fall 2022.
