WOMEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS JOHNSON C. SMITH, BREVARD ON SUNDAY BATTLE

BREVARD, N.C. – UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers women's tennis was able to snag two wins today against the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls and the Brevard College Tornados today with scores of 4-1 and 8-1. 
 

UVA Wise vs. Johnson C. Smith 

In singles play, Liza Akimenko was victorious at No. 1 against Johnson C. Smith's Chengeto Moyana (6-3, 6-2). Sister Katie Akimenko and teammate Anna Hupperten were slated at No. 2 and 3, but they did not finish their sets and neither side scored a win. Sarah Moore of UVA Wise was defeated by Johnson C. Smith's Ione* by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Grace Hall then snagged a win against opponent Imani* with a 6-0, 6-1 score while Emily Conn was able to finish the effort with a win because Johnson C. Smith did not have someone to compete.

In the doubles, UVA Wise came out victorious as they won two of the three sets — L. Akimenko and Moore outscoring Moyana and Ione 6-4 and K. Akimenko and Hupperten getting a win by a no team default. The Cavaliers ended the match winning 4-1.


UVA Wise vs. Brevard

The Cavaliers' were victorious in their first match of the day, and the second match was no different. Starting off singles play was L. Akimenko, who swept away Brevard's Allison Kagoy 6-0, 6-0. Hupperten also came onto the scene with a win in mind, as she defeated Hannah Hersh 6-3, 6-3. Cavalier Hall was no different in No. 3 singles play as she took the W against Hamrick Perry. Moore won over her opponent Brooke Garland in a tight 7-5 and 6-3 score, and Nichols defeated Melody Ferguson 6-0, 6-0. Conn was the only Cavalier who couldn't grab the victory in singles play, as Sophie Trantham of the Tornados refused to go down without a fight and eventually winning the tiebreaker set 10-2.

In doubles play, the Cavaliers had a clean sweep against the Tornados.  L. Akimenko and Hupperten grabbed an 8-0 win against Kagoy and Hersh, K. Akimenko and Conn beat Garland and Perry 8-2, and Hall and Nichols won 8-0 against Ferguson and Trantham.
