Box Score WISE, VA — The UVA Wise Cavaliers women's tennis team succeeded in a two-match winning streak after their victory against the Roanoke College Maroons on Sunday, Sept. 19.
In singles play, Liza Akimenko dominated 6-0, 6-0 against Roanoke's Lucy Collins. Teammate and sister Katie Akimenko started at No.2 and also took control over opponent Halle Fernstrum with a 6-1, 6-3 score. Sarah Moore took stage for the Cavs at No. 3, and beat Margriet Bostoen 6-2, 6-2. At No. 4, Cavalier Grace Hall fell to her Roanoke opponent Julia Bassett 6-0 and 6-4. Emily Conn then took Sophie Bartholomaus by storm and won 6-1, 6-2. To round out the Cavs effort, Sara Nichols played against Dana Meyer and won by a score of 6-0, 6-2.
In the doubles, Akimenko duo struck again and shut out Collins and Fernstrum 6-0. Cavaliers Hall and Moore were then defeated by Roanoke's Bostoen and Bassett 6-4 in No. 2 doubles play. Lastly at No. 3 doubles, Conn and Nichols took down Bartholomaus and Meyer 6-0.
The Cavalier's win against Roanoke comes directly after a 7-0 shutout of Emory & Henry just the day before.
The women's tennis team will be back in action against the Johnson C Smith Golden Bulls in Brevard, N.C. on Sunday, Sept. 26.
