The Catawba Indians have been the South Atlantic Conference's most consistent and best team this winter. Coach Terence McCutchen's squad is undefeated at 10-0 and has beat opponents by an average of 16 points per game. Shemya Stanback has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Indians. The guard is leading the league with 45 assists while adding 10.8 points per game. Stanback is one of five Catawba players averaging in double figures thanks to a defense that forces 23.9 turnovers per game. Forcing turnovers is just part of the Indians' defensive calling card. Thus far, opponents are scoring a league-low 55.4 points per game against Catawba while the team boasts a league-best +8.8 turnover margin. Most recently, Catawba scored a 67-59 win over Virginia Union thanks to a 17-point, seven-assist, eight-steal effort from Stanback.
The road woes continue for UVA Wise who enters Saturday's game at nationally ranked Catawba 0-6 in games played away from the Prior Center. Jamie Cluesman's crew did put forth one of its best road efforts at Lincoln Memorial Wednesday. In that contest, UVA Wise dropped a 72-67 decision despite junior Nia Vanzant dropping a game-high 21 points. Foul trouble plagued the Cavaliers in the loss as starters Caitlyn Ross and Kalee Johnson both fouled of the contest and Vanzant finished the game with four fouls. Senior forward Mackenzie King registered her best game of the season; the Harlan, Ky. product drilled a season-high four 3-pointers en route to a season-high 16 points in the loss. Freshman Josie Hester also turned in the best game of her young collegiate career. The guard made all three of her 3-point attempts as she netted a season-high nine points in 13 minutes of action. As a team, UVA Wise made a season-best 10 shots from beyond the arc.
