Winners of back-to-back games, Lincoln Memorial visits UVA Wise Wednesday in a pivotal South Atlantic Conference contest. The Railsplitters are under the direction of first-year coach Devan Carter who came to Harrogate, Tenn. after spending the previous five seasons at Tusculum where he guided the Pioneers to the 2020 SAC Tournament Championship. At LMU, Carter has his club playing its best ball of the season entering the game at UVA Wise. The Railsplitters have won by an average of 23 points over the last two games, including a 32-point win over Mars Hill. The team relies on its defense which ranks second in the SAC and 17th nationally in points per game allowed at 57.8 points per game. Guard Lauren Flowers has spearheaded the defensive effort, ranking 13th nationally in steals with 22 while also leading the team in scoring (13.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). A key number to watch is 60, LMU is undefeated this season when scoring at least 60 points while being winless when failing to reach the number.
For the third time this season, UVA Wise has the SAC Player of the Week. Redshirt-senior Kalee Johnson took home the honor after averaging a double-double last week. Johnson scored a career-high 25 points while grabbing a career-best 16 rebounds in the Cavaliers' 79-64 win over Newberry Saturday. She is the third different UVA Wise player to earn the award this season, joining teammates Meg Crawford and Nia Vanzant. Despite a 2-0 week, Jamie Cluesman's team is no longer receiving votes in the D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll, UVA Wise has the second longest winning streak in the SAC at six games and is a game out of the top spot in the league standings. A win Wednesday would help prove the Cavs worth in the poll. Lincoln Memorial has been a thorn in the side of UVA Wise for decades. The Railsplitters lead the all-time series 22-to-5 and have lost just once in Wise (2017) in the last 40 years. Balanced scoring continues to be a key to the team's success. Thus far, five Cavs are averaging in double figures, led by Vanzant's 16 points per game. As a team, UVA Wise ranks seventh in NCAA Division in scoring offense at 83.6 points per game; the Cavs have won six games in a row dating back to last season when scoring at least 75 points. A win would give UVA Wise its best start to a season since joining NCAA Division II and allow the team to start 5-0 at home for the second consecutive season.
