Banner Claims Win No. 475 as Cavs Sweep Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - - Head Coach Hank Banner claimed his 475th career coaching win Sunday as his UVA Wise club scored a doubleheader sweep of Tusculum at Pioneer Park. The Cavaliers won game one 15-14 with a walk of hit by pitch before Gabe Wurtz belted a game-winning two-run homer over the left centerfield wall to give his club a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

The series was moved to Greeneville due to poor weather and playing conditions in Wise. Thus, UVA Wise batted last in each game despite being the away team in both contests.

UVA Wise (9-6, 3-2 SAC) played from behind throughout game one. Tusculum (10-9, 0-5 SAC) jumped out in front 4-0 in game one with just one hit. The Pioneers took advantage of a hit batter and three walks to take the early lead.

An inning later, the Cavaliers took the lead behind a six-run frame. Wurtz led off the inning with a single before Peccerelli bounced what could have been a double play ball to third base. An error would be made on the play and that miscue would prove costly.

After an out, Jordon Turner knocked in Wurtz on an RBI groundout. From there, four straight Cavs would line hits to give the visitors a 6-4 lead.

The Pioneers bounced back with a four-run third as Brandon Trammell and Jordan Beaver each lined two-run hits to make it an 8-6 contest.

An inning later, Tusculum pushed across two more runs on an error and a run-scoring single by Trey Hinton.

Trailing 10-6 in the home fourth, Bret Roberts lined a base hit up the middle to plate Ethan Fletcher cutting the lead to three.

The Pioneers countered back in the fifth with sacrifice fly outs by Fuzzy Furr and Luis Era to give the hosts a 12-7 advantage.

In the home half of the frame, Fletcher lined a two-run single to plate Matthew Branham and Tyler Campbell as UVA Wise cut the lead to 12-9 after five innings of play.

The scoring continued for Tusculum in the sixth as Beaver doubled home Trammell. The Cavs plated two in the home sixth on a RBI groundout by Peccerelli and a sacrifice fly by Campbell sent the game to the seventh 13-11.

A zero would finally be hung on the scoreboard by reliever Jeremiah Ball. The right-hander would fire two scoreless innings to send the game to the ninth with UVA Wise trailing 13-11.

In the top of the ninth, Fuzzy Fur would push the lead to 14-11 on an infield single to get Tusculum three outs from victory.

The ninth inning could almost be described as an inning of divine intervention.

Turner walked on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the frame before Fletcher tripled him home cutting the lead to 14-12. Roberts would swing at the next pitch and strike the ball off the end of the bat. A cue shot the ball would wiggle its way down the third base line before staying fair and putting men on the corners.

The next hitter would be Tyler Blaum. The catcher would work the count 2-1 before lining a ball off the third base bag to score Fletcher cutting the lead to a run.

Dawson Cagle would then be called on to bunt in effort to move a pair of runners to scoring position. Cagle would bunt the ball hard, by the pitcher into proverbial "no man's land" for a base hit to load the bases.

Wurtz would then step to the plate with the bases loaded. After falling behind 0-1 in the count, the redshirt senior would be struck by a pitch. Home plate umpire Mo Turner would rule that Wurtz made an attempt at the ball and ruled it as strike two. Coach Banner would dispute the call and after consultation with field umpires, the call was overturned allowing the tying run to score.

One pitch later, Peccerelli was struck with a pitch to send Blaum home with the game-winning run.

Fletcher had a big game at the plate as the outfielder finished 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored to pace a 16-hit attack for the Cavaliers. Blaum went 4-for-5 in the game while Cagle and Roberts lined three hits each in the win.

Tyler Hayes was credited with the mound win, the sophomore allowed a run in the ninth as he improved to 1-0 on the year.

Game two was an opposite of a game as could be played in baseball terms as UVA Wise hurler Greg Duncan and Tusculum starter Nick Flesher engaged in a pitcher's duel.

Wurtz would get the Cavs on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first to score Roberts.

The score would remain 1-0 until the sixth inning when an infield single by Matthew Branham gave UVA Wise a 2-0 lead as Wurtz scampered home.

Duncan who was seemingly on cruise control would be unable to finish the complete game shutout. Stegall homered with one out in the seventh before Hinton tied the game with a RBI single in the top of the seventh.

Wurtz capped the doubleheader sweep with a mammoth two-run blast on a fastball for the walk off victory.

Duncan improved to 3-0 on the mound as he struck out seven, walked just one and scattered six hits in the complete game effort.

Branham, Wurtz and Roberts each had two hits to pace a nine-hit effort for UVA Wise who secured its first ever SAC series win with the doubleheader sweep.

The 475 wins by Banner are the most by any coach in UVA Wise history, the skipper and his team will wrap up the series Monday at 1 p.m.
