Offense Erupts in Game Two as Cavs Post DH Sweep of Trojans

ETTRICK, Va. - - UVA Wise claimed a doubleheader sweep of host Virginia State in non-conference NCAA Division II baseball action Saturday. The Cavaliers used a game-winning single by senior Dawson Cagle to win the opener 3-2 before freshman Shawn Campbell fanned six over four innings to earn his first collegiate mound win in a 10-1 triumph in game two.

UVA Wise (3-2) received a quality start from senior right-hander Greg Duncan who struck out seven over five innings while not allowing a run.

The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ethan Fletcher's sacrifice fly scored Tristan Peccerelli. The score remain unchanged until the fifth inning when Tyler Blaum singled in Fletcher to make it a 2-0 contest.

Virginia State (1-3) tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer by Keon Smith only to see the tie be short lived as Cagle plated Bret Roberts in the top of the seventh to give UVA Wise back the lead.

Sophomore Tyler Hayes came in out of the bullpen to record his second save of the season by working around a two-out single.

Blaum and Peccerelli each had three hits in the game to lead an eight-hit attack for Hank Banner's squad.

Game two saw the Cavalier offense erupt for an early season-high 10 runs in addition to the historic mound win for Campbell.

The scoring started early as UVA Wise scored four runs over the first three innings to take command of the game and never look back.

Peccerelli, Blaum and Roberts all had an RBI in the early inning scoring to stake Campbell to a lead.

The right-hander would not allow a hit until the third inning as his final stat line read four innings pitched, six strikeouts, three walks, two hits allowed and an earned run.

Roberts capped his big day by going 3-for-5 with three RBI, Matthew Branham also knocked in a pair while Gabe Wurtz scored three runs and Jordon Turner, Branham and Blaum scored two runs each.

The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
