Cavaliers Tripped Up by Royals

WISE - UVa-Wise was tripped up at home Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-10) loss to Queens University of Charlotte inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

A 12-7 Queens (8-3, 5-2 SAC) advantage to open the first set caused a Cavalier timeout as UVa-Wise looked to regroup.  The Royals did not slow down as they went on to take the first set 25-14.

The Cavaliers (1-9, 0-7 SAC) and Royals battled it out in the second set as the two teams tied the set five times. The Cavaliers capitalized off of back-to-back kills by sophomore Abigail Byington and redshirt senior Ciara Kain to take their largest lead of the match, 14-10, over Queens. The Royals climbed back to take the lead and eventually the set, 25-19.

Queens carried its momentum into the final set as the Royals went ahead 10-2 to open the third set. Queens continued to dominate for a 25-10 set three victory.

Sophomore Kelsey Green led the way for the Cavs with eight kills while adding two digs and a block assist. Kain followed with four kills while freshman Zoe Avery posted a season-high 20 assists. Senior Morgan Milligan recorded a team-high 11 digs in the match.

Head coach Kristen Salyer's squad will stay home for a non-conference match against Concord University Tuesday at 6 p.m. before heading to South Carolina for South Atlantic Conference action at Newberry College and Anderson University (S.C.) next weekend.
