Volleyball Falls to Concord in Five Set Battle

WISE – UVa-Wise volleyball fell in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 29-31, 15-11) to the Mountain Lions of Concord University Tuesday evening. After Concord took the first two sets, the Cavaliers rallied to win sets three and four, but were unable to complete the comeback in the final set.

A series of Concord (3-9) errors put UVa-Wise (1-10) on top 13-9 before the Mountain Lions regained momentum to take a 21-16 set one lead into a UVa-Wise timeout. The Cavs managed to tie the set late at 25 apiece but Concord would win the final two points to take the first set, 27-25.

The second set stayed close between the two teams, tying the set five times before Concord gained a late 16-14 advantage. The Mountain Lions maintained the lead to take set two, 25-18.

UVa-Wise bounced back in the third set with a 5-0 run forcing a Concord timeout as the Cavs led 18-11. UVa-Wise stayed on top with a kill by freshman Meagan Blagg sealing the deal as the Cavs won set three, 25-19.

Down five to start, UVa-Wise won five straight points to tie the match at 10 apiece. Concord used a timeout with an 18-14 lead over the Cavs later in the set but UVa-Wise fought back to knot the match once more, 22-22, as Concord called another timeout. The two teams tied the match seven more times before UVa-Wise prevailed with a 31-29 set four victory.

With the match tied, redshirt senior Ciara Kain and junior Brooke Abbott assisted the Cavs to a 5-1 start on a series of kills and a block to open the fifth set. Concord tied the set soon after at 8-8 as the Cavs called a timeout. UVa-Wise fell behind coming out of the break, down 12-9 to the Mountain Lions. Concord would go on to win the set on a kill to take the match, 3-2.
