WISE – Cavalier volleyball fell to Catawba College in straight sets Friday night, 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-6), inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
UVa-Wise (1-8, 0-6 SAC) struggled to get going early on in the match with Catawba leading 11-4. The Indians continued to dominate the set, allowing just three more points for the Cavs as Catawba took set one, 25-7.
Catawba (3-4, 2-4 SAC) ran up the score early in the second set as UVa-Wise battled a slow start. A 5-0 run by the Indians forced a Cavalier timeout, as Catawba used another small run to take an 18-9 advantage. UVa-Wise clawed their way back to get within five points late on a kill by junior Brooke Abbott as the Indians still led, 20-15. The Indians would go on to take the third set, 25-18, for a 2-0 Catawba advantage.
Up by two points early, Catawba surged ahead to gain a double-digit lead, 14-4 midway through the third set. The Indians did not let up as the visitors posted a 25-6 victory in the third to take the match, 3-0.
Abbott and redshirt senior Ciara Kain each totaled four kills for the Cavs while Abbott finished with a team-high .429 attack percentage. Senior Morgan Milligan posted 10 assists while senior Briana Kerr notched 10 digs in the loss.
Head Coach Kristen Salyer's team will return to action Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest against Queens University of Charlotte inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
