MEC Softball Tournament Preview

WISE - - Cavalier softball enters into the postseason as a fourth-seed in the South Division after posting a 22-15 overall record and a 16-16 Mountain East Conference mark. UVa-Wise closed out the regular season with another eight-game stretch where the team picked up a pair of wins against Glenville State College and Wheeling Jesuit University. Co-Head Coaches Karen Bitter and Nick Bitter's team will open the tournament with a game against the top-seeded West Liberty Hilltoppers Friday afternoon.

UVa-Wise finished the season going 2-6 in its final eight regular season contests. It was the second weekend in a row the Cavaliers played eight consecutive contests as the team went 5-3 the previous weekend.

Junior Taylor Creasey capped off a strong campaign as she leads her team with a .324 batting average, 45 hits, and a .647 slugging percentage (6th in the MEC). Creasey was recently named to the All-MEC Second Team as the only softball player to garner All-MEC acclaim this season.

Sophomore Alexis Miles' 10 home runs this season not only lead the Cavs but tie her for fourth in the MEC for most homers this year. Miles' .606 slugging percentage falls right behind Creasey in the MEC individual rankings while the designated player is batting .310 with a team-high 34 runs. Miles and senior Shannon Bennett each have 44 hits to date this season, the second-most on the team, while Bennett is batting .319, second-highest average on the team.

Sophomore Kaylee Jones has recorded 33 runs so far this campaign, scoring at least one run in each of the Cavs last four games. Batting .305 this year, Jones is one of four Cavalier players who has broken 40 hits this season including seven doubles, two triples, and nine home runs.

In the circle, junior Raychel Lapallo and sophomore Kailyn Spencer have taken on most of the duties with Lapallo earning nine wins while Spencer has gained 10 through the regular season. Spencer leads the pitching staff with a 3.39 ERA with 13 complete games under her belt including two shutouts.

Notes on West Liberty University

As the top-seed in the North Division, the Hilltoppers visit Salem with a 32-17 overall mark, 24-8 in conference, ending the regular season with a 8-2 record over their final 10 games. West Liberty is currently ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region as one of four MEC teams to be ranked in the top-10.

Allie Cooke leads her team with a .381 batting average on 53 hits. She has scored 35 runs and is posting a team-best .488 on base percentage.

Kat Donzella is boasting a team-high .694 slugging percentage (2nd in the MEC) with her 47 RBI being the second-most in the league. She is also 12-for-13 in stolen bases and adds a .989 fielding percentage.

Makenzie Amend's 2.28 ERA is the best on the Hilltoppers' pitching staff with opponents batting .197 against her. In the circle, Amend has earned 12 wins across 101 1/3 innings while striking out 119 to date this campaign.

Series History

UVa-Wise leads the all-time series against West Liberty 9-3 following the Hilltoppers two wins against the Cavs back in April.
