Box Score HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - - No. 5 women's tennis dropped its match against the top-seeded University of Charleston in the semifinals of the Mountain East Conference tournament Thursday afternoon, 4-0. The Golden Eagles won a pair of matches to earn the doubles point before winning three straight singles matches to secure the win.
Charleston's (21-4) Kristine Gegeshidze and Katie Swann teamed up at the No. 1 spot where they defeated UVa-Wise (7-13) freshmen Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko, 6-3. Senior Montana Hill and freshman Lillian Morris fell to the Golden Eagles Elise Edwards and Silivana Slusarciuc at the No. 2 position, 6-3, as junior Aya Melhem and freshman Grace Hall would not finish their match with Charleston leading 1-0 into singles play.
Morris was swept at the number six position as Charleston's Regina Lopez-Saneedo earned the Golden Eagles first singles match win of the day. Freshman Olivia Dishner dropped her match to Charleston's Mathilde Simon, 6-0, 6-1, at number five while Hill fell at the number four position, 6-2, 6-1, to the Golden Eagles' Slusarciuc. Melhem, Katya Akimenko, and Liza Akimenko would not finish their matches as the Golden Eagles defeated the Cavaliers, 4-0.
Head Coach Danny Rowland's team will return to action in the fall.
