Box Score 2 ATHENS, W. Va. - - Softball picked up a pair of wins on the road at Concord Wednesday evening. The Cavs took game one 8-5 in 12 innings with the help of a grand slam by sophomore Kaylee Jones in the top of the 12th frame before outlasting the Mountain Lions in game two, 5-4.
Concord (19-14, 7-7 MEC) pulled ahead to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single up the middle to score Laura Thompson. The Mountain Lions pushed their advantage to 2-0 later in the bottom of the third on a solo homer to left field off the bat of Kylie Kent.
UVa-Wise (14-15, 8-6 MEC) earned its first run of the day in the top of the fifth frame as sophomore Casey Chambers doubled to left center before advancing to third on a fly out. Senior Ava Hockey scored the third baseman on an RBI single through the left side as the Cavs left two on base to end the top of the frame.
A leadoff double by sophomore Alexis Miles in the top of the sixth inning put UVa-Wise in position to score once again. A two-out single off the bat of junior pitcher Raychel Lapallo would bring home Miles to knot the game at 2-2.
The game would still be tied at two apiece after seven innings with neither team scoring another run until the top of the 10th frame. With junior Nikki Smith placed on second, a sacrifice hit by junior Taylor Creasey advanced the short stop to third before a sacrifice fly to right field scored Smith to pull the Cavs ahead 3-2.
Concord scored its third run to knot the game once again on a throwing error and would leave one stranded heading into the top of the 11th frame with the game tied at 3-3.
UVa-Wise plated one more in the top of the 11th as sophomore Kaylee Jones scored after being placed on second for a 4-3 advantage.
The Mountain Lions responded in the home half of the inning when Lauren Blunt scored Dani Bloomingdale on a single to center field, tying the game at 4-4 into the 12th.
Junior Julia Hoy started on second for the Cavs in the top of the 12th as Hockey advanced the first baseman on a bunt. A hit by pitch put Miles on first to load the bases for UVa-Wise. With two outs, Jones hammered a homer to left field for her third of the season and first career grand slam to push the Cavs lead to 8-4 going into the bottom of the frame.
Concord scored one more in the home half of the final frame, but a trio of outs secured the win for the Cavs as they took game one 8-5.
Miles, Jones, Chambers, and Hockey each recorded a pair of hits in the game while Jones finished with a team-high four RBI.
Lapallo improved to 6-6 on the season with the win as she scattered five hits and fanned three in 7 2/3 innings in the circle.
The Mountain Lions' Darby Fitzpatrick (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing 12 hits and striking out one in a complete game effort.
UVa-Wise jumped ahead of the Mountain Lions with the Cavs first run of game two in the top of the second on a solo shot to left field by Jones for her second home run of the day.
Concord took the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs giving the Mountain Lions a 2-1 advantage into the fourth frame.
The Cavs gained a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth as Chambers scored Jones on an RBI single before Hoy drove home Chambers on a double to right field. Two innings later, sophomore pitcher Kailyn Spencer nailed her third homer of the campaign to right center to extend the Cavs margin to two runs, 4-2.
UVa-Wise tacked on one more in the top of the seventh as Jones scored for the third time on a wild pitch for a 5-2 Cavalier lead.
Concord attempted to rally from behind in the home half of the seventh inning with a two-out double to left center scoring one before the Mountain Lions plated another run on a Cavalier error. Concord looked to tie the game on a single through the right side by the Mountain Lions' Witt, but Hockey's throw from right field to senior catcher Lucindy Lawson would get the final out at home to secure the 5-4 victory for the Cavs.
Eight Cavaliers recorded a hit led by Spencer and Chambers who each had two hits in the game.
Spencer improved to 5-4 with the win as she twirled a complete game scattering seven hits and striking out four.
Concord's Cartney Schoolcraft fell to 8-4 with the loss as she allowed nine hits and struck out 10 across six innings in the circle.
Co-Head Coaches Karen Bitter and Nick Bitter's team will stay on the road for games against Wheeling Jesuit Saturday and West Liberty Sunday afternoon. First pitch against the Cardinals is slated for 1 p.m
