Softball Begins MEC North Play Against Shepherd, Fairmont State

WISE - - UVa-Wise softball hosts a series of doubleheaders this week as the team begins North Division play against Shepherd and Fairmont State.

About UVa-Wise

UVa-Wise wrapped up its season series against Concord University Wednesday splitting its doubleheader with the Mountain Lions. The Cavaliers now hold an overall 15-16 record and a 9-7 mark in the Mountain East Conference.

Senior Shannon Bennett continues to lead UVa-Wise with 34 hits across 90 at bats so far this season. The left fielder's .376 batting average is seventh in the league.

Junior Taylor Creasey has recorded a team-high five triples so far in the campaign, tying with Leann Brown of Shepherd for the top spot in the category in the MEC.

Junior Raychel Lapallo earned her first shutout of the season in the circle on Wednesday, improving to 7-6 on the year. The right-hander now claims a 6.53 ERA across 73 innings with six complete game performances.

Notes on Shepherd University

The Rams enter into Monday's matchup with a conference-leading 18-2 mark, 30-6 overall. Shepherd is currently on an eight game winning streak, winning 24 of their last 25 contests.

As a team, Shepherd is fourth in the Mountain East with an overall .288 batting average while ranking second in runs scored (171) and runs batted in (154).

 Freshman Nicole Purtell is second in the conference in runs scored (30) and is recording a team-leading .422 batting average against conference opponents.

The Rams pitching staff maintain the lowest earned run average in the league at 1.71 with junior Taylor Stocks leading the charge with her 1.28 ERA followed by senior Lori Sturgill who claims a 1.32 ERA to date. Opponents are batting just .151 and .185 against Stocks and Sturgill, respectively. Stocks also leads the conference striking out 117 batters and notched 13 wins so far this season.

Notes on Fairmont State University

Fairmont State comes to Wise with an overall 19-17 record and a 13-9 mark in the league, three-way tie with Charleston and Concord for fourth place. The Fighting Falcons will look to snap a four game losing streak following road losses at Shepherd and Concord this past week.

Junior Darby Peterson leads her squad with a .417 batting average followed by junior Jenny Stubbs who is batting .350 with a team-leading .530 slugging percentage and 19 runs scored so far this campaign.

Senior Hannah Absalom holds a 1.45 earned run average, third-best in the league, with 12 wins in the circle across 121 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .241 against the right-hander this season as she's had 16 complete game performances with five shutouts.

Series History

Shepherd University leads the all-time series against the Cavs 5-7 after going 0-2 against UVa-Wise during the 2018 regular season. UVa-Wise last saw the Rams in the 2018 Mountain East Conference Tournament when the Cavs defeated Shepherd in a 5-0 shutout win.

Fairmont State leads the all-time series against UVa-Wise 6-4 following a doubleheader split in the teams' last matchup in 2018.
