WISE - - UVa-Wise pushed its winning streak to five games Saturday as the Cavaliers claimed a pair of one-run victories over Notre Dame College at Stallard Field. The Cavaliers won game one 3-2 behind solid pitching from Greg Duncan and Nate Thompson before outlasting the Falcons 7-6 in eight innings as a walk off bases loaded walk by Brett Yates scored the game-winning run in the team's home opening series.
Notre Dame (7-14, 1-5 MEC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one as a two-out RBI single by Joseph Paskell plated Ricky Phillips in the first before a two-out single by Zach Santoro scored Zarek Simkovich to make it a 2-0 game after the top of the second.
UVa-Wise (11-12, 5-1 MEC) bounced back with a two-run second inning. Tyler Blaum hit what could have been an inning ending double play only to see an errant throw which allowed Bret Roberts to score and David Thomas to move to third base. A hitter later, Tristan Peccerelli lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing Thomas to scamper home with the game tying run.
The offense seemed to motivate Duncan who retired 10 of the next 11 hitters he faced. The right-hander finished the day by tossing 6 1/3 innings of four-hit, two-run baseball while striking out six and walking two. The win improved him to 4-0 on the season.
Duncan's teammates gave him the lead when Thomas singled through the right side of the infield on a 3-2 pitch in the fifth inning allowing Yates to score the go-ahead run.
In the top of the seventh, Duncan fanned Matt Richards swinging for the first out of the inning before a one-out double by Naja Garcia put the tying run on second. At that point, UVa-Wise coach Hank banner went to the bullpen and brought in Nate Thompson. Thompson would strike out Santoro before getting Drake May to pop up to shortstop for the game's final out.
The save was the third of the season for Thompson who needed just eight pitches in the relief effort.
Thomas had two of the five hits for the Cavaliers who took advantage of four Falcon errors in game one.
Game two saw Notre Dame come back from a 5-1 deficit to force extra innings.
RBI singles by Thomas and Peccerelli gave the Cavs a 2-0 lead after an inning of play before a Paskell solo homer made it a 2-1 game after the top of the second.
UVa-Wise plated three in the home half of the frame as Brock Smith singled in Ethen Fletcher to make the score 3-1. A hitter later, Bret Roberts tripled home Smith before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Yates.
The visitors pecked away for the remainder of the afternoon. A wild pitch made it a 5-2 game in the top of the third before an error cut the deficit to two in the top of the fourth. An RBI groundout by Santoro scored Luke Thompson in the fifth and Notre Dame had cut the lead to 5-4.
Banner went back to Thompson in the seventh trying to preserve a one-run lead. Things started off well for the hurler then quickly soured; the right-hander struck out Thompson on a slider only to see the ball kick away allowing the leadoff man to reach on a wild pitch. After a ground out and Thompson's second K of the inning, the Falcons were down to their final out.
Paskell would hit a hard ground ball up the middle and it would take a bad hop forcing an error allowing the tying run to score.
After a 1-2-3 home seventh, Notre Dame took its first lead of the game on a Ryan Kosmynka solo homer in the top of the eighth.
Relentless, UVa-Wise battled back. Peccerelli led off the home half of the inning with a double to right centerfield before moving up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Following a walk to Dawson Cagle, Ethan Fletcher hit a chopper to the shortstop allowing Peccerelli to score tying the game at 6-6.
Turner and Smith would then work back-to-back walks to load the bases for Roberts. With the infield in, Roberts would hit a groundball to the shortstop who came up firing to throw out pinch runner Hunter Brown at the plate.
A hitter later, Yates would take four straight balls allowing Turner to score the game-winning run.
Peccerelli finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Fletcher, Roberts and Smith had two hits each as part of a 12-hit attack.
Freshman Devan Mathis was credited with his first collegiate mound win as he allowed a run in an inning of work.
Landon Faulkner struck out seven across five innings of work as the UVa-Wise starter. The hurler was plagued by poor defense as he surrendered four runs, three of which were unearned.
Todd Marshall was saddled with the loss on the mound for Notre Dame. Marshall walked four men in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Recent history in the UVa-Wise vs. Notre Dame series has shown the team's to play close games. The pair of one-run victories Saturday marked the fifth time in the last six meetings that Hank Banner's team has won over the Falcons by a single run.
With the sweep, the Cavs are just a game below .500 at 11-12 after starting the season 0-8.
