Box Score 2 WISE - - UVa-Wise softball was unable to get a win against Lincoln Memorial University on Sunday. The Cavaliers fell in the first game of the doubleheader, 6-3, and were defeated by a score of 12-9 in game two.
The Cavaliers (7-5) got on the board first in game one when sophomore Nikki Smith scored on a sacrifice fly out by Bridget Henzel in the bottom of the first inning.
 Lincoln Memorial (9-7) would get two across in the top of the third inning. With runners on first and third, a double to centerfield by Ty-Kella Goins would score Bella Buccellato for an unearned run. Jacie Pittman would then fly out to centerfield on a sacrifice to allow Becca Burchette to cross home plate and put the Railsplitters up 2-1.
UVa-Wise responded in the home half of the third when Henzel lined a two-RBI double. The Cavs would end that inning with two runs on two hits gain a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the fourth.
The score would remain unchanged until the top of the seventh when Lincoln Memorial scored four runs.
Buccellato started the inning with a single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Goins would then single to left and get to second on an error.
Pittman would become the third consecutive Railsplitter to reach base in the inning when she reached on an error that allowed Goins and Buccellato to score, giving LMU a 4-3 advantage.
Kelsie Hocutt would then single to left field allowing Allie Jones and Pittman to cross home plate and give the Railsplitters a 6-3 victory in game one.
Ely went 3-for-4 with one run while Henzel went 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Senior pitcher Taylor Brandts (4-2) suffered the loss for the Cavs as the right-hander allowed 10 hits and six runs with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Brianna Taylor (4-4) earned the win as she had a complete game allowing nine hits and three runs.
Lincoln Memorial would come out hot in game two, putting four runs on the board in the top of the first inning.
Both teams would score a run in the second inning as LMU put a runner across on a sacrifice bunt.
In the home half of the second, sophomore Taylor Creasey would homer over the fence and cut the Cavs deficit, 5-1.
UVa-Wise would drive home two more in the bottom of the third when junior Lucindy Lawson doubled to left centerfield, scoring senior Zoe Millard and Ely to make the score 5-3 heading into the fourth.
The Railsplitters would get four across home plate in the top of the fourth, with three of the runs scored on a three-run homer by Webb. Webb's homer to right centerfield would push across Goins and Jones. Hocutt followed with a solo homer to left centerfield to extend LMU's lead to 9-3.
The visitors would get two more runs in the top of the fifth behind a Pittman home run.
UVa-Wise would also push across two runners in the fifth inning when freshman Casey Chambers doubled down the left field line to score sophomore Alexis Sheehan and Henzel.
LMU's Hocutt opened up the sixth inning with a homer to centerfield making the score 12-5.
Ely would then blast a homer to left field and score junior Ava Hockey in the bottom of the sixth as the Railsplitters held a 12-7 advantage.
Creasey would hammer her second homerun of the day and score Chambers in the bottom of the seventh as the Cavaliers dropped game two of the double header, 12-9.
Ely had a big game as she went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in game two. Both Lawson and Chambers went 1-for-4 with two RBI while Hockey finished 2-for-3 with a run. Creasey went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two homeruns.
Freshman Kailyn Spencer (1-2) logged the Cavalier loss as she allowed eight hits and five runs.
Justice Smith (5-3) notched the win for Lincoln Memorial as she recorded six strikeouts.
Up next, UVa-Wise will play in the Tusculum Tournament first taking on Goldey-Beacom on Mar. 9 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. They will then play on Mar. 10 against Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m. and Tusculum College at 3 p.m.
