Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. - - Women's tennis was outlasted by Lees-McRae College Sunday afternoon, 5-2. The Cavaliers' Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko each won their match at the No.1 and No. 2 singles position, respectively, as well as securing a win at the No. 1 doubles position.
Liza and Katya Akimenko paired up at No. 1 doubles for UVa-Wise (0-4), earning a 6-3 win over the Bobcats' Sandy Allen and Nuvsharneem Shamsuddin. At the number two spot, Grace Hall and Montana Hill fell to their opponents, 6-0, before Aya Melhem and Lillian Morris were upset, 6-1, at the number three spot.
At singles for the Cavs, Liza Akimenko posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lees-McRae's Allen at the number one spot while Katya Akimenko defeated her opponent, 6-4, 6-3, at the number two position. At No. 3, Melhem fell in a tiebreaker set, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7, with Hill played at the No. 4 position where she was outlasted by the Bobcats' McKenzie Langmade, 6-1, 6-2. Grace Hall fell in a close match at the number five spot, 6-2, 6-4, while Olivia Dishner was upset at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.
Women's tennis returns to competition in the spring with their first match against Georgetown College (Ky.) on Feb. 23. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
