Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. - - Cavalier women's tennis (3-7, 2-4) fell to West Liberty University, 7-2, on Saturday. Senior Daria Tyshchenko and junior Montana Hill both earned victories in their singles matches for the Cavs.
Tyshchenko teamed up with sophomore Aya Melhem at the No. 1 doubles position as they were outlasted by West Liberty's Maruine Oudart and Thais Mendez, 8-3. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Taylor Carter and junior Mackenzie Lawson won two games on their opponents but were ultimately defeated by the Hilltoppers' Laura Huwe and Alaina Pauley, 8-2. Hill and freshman Gabrielle Beville paired up at the No. 3 position as they were swept, 8-0, by Ana Berbel andn Ekaterina Pinchuk of West Liberty.
At No. 1 singles, Tyshchenko managed to get the Cavs first win of the day as she prevailed in a tough match over Oudart of West Liberty, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Melhem was able to win four games over her opponent in the second set, but would fall, 6-2, 6-4, to the Hilltoppers' Huwe at the No. 2 position. Carter fell 6-1, 6-0 to West Liberty's Mendez at number three, while Lawson suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback against Berbel of West Liberty at the No. 4 position. The Hilltoppers' Pinchuk outlasted senior Serena Burgess at the No. 5 spot, 6-0, 6-1. Hill put up a fight against West Liberty's Pauley as she was able to come back after falling in the first set and earn a 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 victory over her opponent at the No. 6 singles position.
UVa-Wise women's tennis will return home for a non-conference matchup against Lincoln Memorial University on Monday, Oct. 2. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
