Box Score WISE - - UVa-Wise women's tennis dropped a close conference match, 5-4, against Fairmont State University on Sunday. The Cavs (3-5, 2-2 MEC) won two doubles and two singles matches as they were narrowly defeated by the Falcons.
Sophomore Taylor Carter and junior Mackenzie Lawson fell to the Falcons' Trinite' Klamadji and Heloisa Adams, 8-3, at the top doubles spot. Senior duo Daria Tyshchenko and Serena Burgess outlasted their opponents, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot defeating Fairmont's Isadora Matos and Hayley Hatfield. Sophomore Aya Melhem and freshman Gabrielle Beville battled it out at the No. 3 spot against the Falcons' Katelyn Shirkey and Bailey Edeburn as the Cavs prevailed over Fairmont, 9-8 (8-6), to win the match.
Tyshchenko faced Klamadji at the No. 1 singles position as the Cavalier played strong through both sets, but was overpowered by the Falcon, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 2, Melhem managed to win three games against her opponent in the first set, but was ultimately defeated, 6-3, 6-1, by Adams of Fairmont State. Carter suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback against the Falcons' Matos while Lawson was able to get the first singles win for the Cavs as she defeated Fairmont's Hatfield, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. Burgess played through a tough match at the No. 5 position as she won the first set but fell in the next two against the Falcons' Janay Beamer, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Montana Hill earned the final win of the day for the Cavaliers as she defeated Shirkey of Fairmont, 7-5, 6-1.
The Cavs will have another conference match-up against the University of Charleston on Tuesday, Sept. 26. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
