Box Score BUCKHANNON, W. Va. - - Cavalier women's tennis fell to West Virginia Wesleyan, 9-0, on Saturday. The Cavs are now 2-1 in the conference and 3-4 on the season.
Senior Dasha Tyshchenko and sophomore Aya Melhem paired up at the No. 1 doubles position as they fell, 8-6, in a tight match against Wesleyan's Irene Nunez and Rebekka Heigermoser. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Taylor Carter and junior Mackenzie Lawson teamed up to take on Cecila Martinez and Julia Yanes of Wesleyan, but the Cavs were outlasted by the Lady Bobcats, 8-3. At No. 3 doubles, senior Serena Burgess and freshman Gabby Beville suffered an 8-1 loss by the Lady Bobcats' Estel Fernandez and Mariona Junyer.
At singles, Tyschenko fell 4-3 at the top spot as she retired from her match against Wesleyan's Nunez. Melhem played at the No. 2 spot against the Lady Bobcats' Heigermoser as she dropped the match, 6-3, 6-0. Carter won two games in the first set but was overpowered by Martinez of Wesleyan, 6-2, 6-0, at the third position. At the No. 4 position, Lawson managed to win three games in each set, but was outlasted by Wesleyan's Yanes, 6-3, 6-3. Burgess was blanked at the No. 5 position, losing the set 6-0, 6-0. Junior Montana Hill suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback against Kasumi Hayashi of West Virginia Wesleyan at No. 6 singles.
Women's tennis will return home for another conference match against Fairmont State University tomorrow, Sept. 24, with first serve scheduled for 10 a.m.
