WISE – Cavalier women's tennis went undefeated this weekend as they blanked Maryville College, 9-0, Sunday afternoon. After today's win, the Cavs are now 1-0 in conference play and 2-3 on the season.

UVa-Wise dominated in doubles as senior Daria Tyshchenko and sophomore Aya Melhem paired up at the No. 1 spot and swept Maryville's Savannah Bain and Carter Dickinson, 8-0. Sophomore Taylor Carter and junior Mackenzie Lawson handed the Scots' Anastasia Dunn and Kayla Zimmerman a 8-2 loss, while junior Montana Hill and senior Serena Burgess won by an identical score of 8-2 as they defeated McKennah Francis and Anna Harris of Maryville.

The Cavs did not let up momentum as they moved into singles play. While Tyshchenko sat out due to an injury, Melhem proved dominate at the No. 1 position only allowing one game by her opponent as she defeated Maryville's Zimmerman, 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 2 spot, Carter collected a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the Scots' Dunn while Lawson swept Maryville's Bain, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 position. Burgess played at the No. 4 spot for the Cavs as she overpowered the Scot's Francis by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Hill prevailed over Dickinson of Maryville with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 5 doubles position. Freshman Gabrielle Beville made an impressive singles debut as she outlasted the Scots' Harris in a thrilling three set match. After tying the match at a set a piece, 5-7, 6-4, Beville came back from a 9-6 deficit to take the tie-breaker set, 11-9, defeating Maryville's Harris.

UVa-Wise will match up against Concord University on Wednesday, Sept. 20. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
