WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise women's tennis was defeated 7-2 by Davis & Elkins College in its spring home opener Saturday afternoon at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. The host Cavaliers (8-10) claimed one singles and one doubles match in the loss to the visiting Senators (2-2).
 
UVa-Wise found itself down 2-1 after doubles competition but picked up a win at No. 2 doubles after junior Daria Tyshchenko (Kirovograd, Ukraine) teamed up with fellow junior Serena Burgess (Dumfries, Va.) to defeat Amanda Fewster and Haileigh Carper of Davis & Elkins, 9-7. Sophomore Montana Hill (Riner, Va.) and freshman Carlysle Funk (Coeburn, Va.) took on the Senators' Kelsie Roby and Kalee Sherrard but were only able to get one game, falling 8-1. At the top doubles spot, freshman Taylor Carter (Church Hill, Tenn.) and sophomore Mackenzie Lawson (Wise, Va.) dropped an 8-0 decision to Laura Fermosel and Elise Simon of Davis & Elkins.
 
In singles play Lawson earned the lone singles point for the Cavs when she picked up a three-set win at the third spot against the Senators' Fewster. Lawson won the opening set 6-4 but was then defeated 6-2 in the second before winning the third-set super tiebreaker, 11-9. Burgess battled her opponent at No. 5 singles but was edged in three sets. After winning the first set 6-4, Burgess lost the second by an identical score and then was defeated 10-5 in the third-set super tiebreaker by Carper of Davis & Elkins.
 
Hill claimed three games off of the Senators' Sherrard at the sixth singles position but fell 8-3 in a pro set after Davis & Elkins had already clinched the match. At No. 2 singles, Carter took a game off of the Senators' Simon but was unable to claim anymore as she lost 6-1, 6-0. Davis & Elkins' Fermosel and Roby each scored 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles over Tyshchenko and Funk. It was just second time Funk played as high as No. 4 in the singles lineup.
 
The Cavs will have two weeks off before returning to game action on Saturday, March 18, when UVa-Wise wraps up its spring play at the University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky, for a 12 p.m. match.
