WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 home win over the University of Pikeville Saturday afternoon at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. The Cavaliers (9-10) won three out of four singles matches played and took second doubles to clinch the victory as the visiting Bears (0-3) only had four players available to compete.
 
After a default win by freshmen Taylor Carter (Church Hill, Tenn.) and Carlysle Funk (Coeburn, Va.) at No. 3 doubles, sophomore Mackenzie Lawson (Wise, Va.) teamed up with junior Serena Burgess (Dumfries, Va.) for UVa-Wise's first match win of the day. Lawson and Burgess defeated Bryanna Schroers and Emma Wonn of Pikeville, 8-2, at second doubles. At the top doubles spot, junior Daria Tyshchenko (Kirovograd, Ukraine) and senior Bailey Christoforatos (Fredericksburg, Va.) were handed a 8-3 loss by the Bears' Macarena Acuna and Cailee Marcum.
 
After Burgess and Lawson picked up defaults at the fifth and sixth singles positions, both freshman Aya Melhem (Rockvale, Tenn.) and Carter won by convincing scores at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Melhem took down Marcum of Pikeville 6-0, 6-1 at the second spot, while Carter topped the Bears' Schroers 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.
 
Funk earned the Cavs' seventh point of the day when she defeated Wonn of Pikeville at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
 
Pikeville's lone singles win came at the top spot where Acuna bested Tyshchenko in a 6-1, 6-2 match.
 
Saturday's match wrapped up the spring portion of the Cavalier women's 2016-17 schedule.
