WISE, Va. – Thursday afternoon's UVa-Wise softball doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial University has been canceled due to overnight rain/snow in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. The doubleheader, which was scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. today in Harrogate, Tennessee, will be rescheduled but no make-up date has been announced at this time.
The Cavaliers will now have to wait two more days before beginning their 2017 campaign. UVa-Wise takes on Mercyhurst University in a neutral-site game in Hickory, North Carolina, Saturday at 1 p.m. to open up its season. The Cavs will also face Lenoir-Rhyne University in a true road game Saturday at 5 p.m. The Bears are ranked No. 25 according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top-25 Preseason Poll after reaching the 2016 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional tournament and capturing the South Atlantic Conference regular season title a year ago. Both games are a part of Lenoir-Rhyne's Second Annual Bear Bash as UVa-Wise plays Johnson C. Smith University and Lees-McRae College Sunday.
