Box Score WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise men's basketball picked up a key Mountain East Conference home win Saturday afternoon in the David J. Prior Convocation Center, defeating Glenville State College 90-85. The Cavaliers (6-16, 4-12 MEC) used a balanced scoring attack and shot the ball well in both halves to earn the win over the visiting Pioneers (8-12, 5-11 MEC). UVa-Wise led for all but three and a half minutes of the contest and never trailed in the second half.
Shooting 52 percent (37-of-71) for the game, the Cavs hit seven of its first nine 3-point attempts and made a total of 12 from long range while assisting on 21 of its 37 made baskets. Five different Cavs scored in double figures as UVa-Wise was active on the defensive end, grabbing 10 steals and making three blocks.
Both teams were scoreless through the first two minutes of play before Glenville State's Brett Morris hit a jumper to give the Pioneers an early 2-0 advantage. The Cavs responded with a 7-0 run that was capped by a basket from freshman guard
Chance Sheffey (Staunton, Va.) to take their first lead of the game at 7-2. Glenville State outscored UVa-Wise 9-3 over the next two minutes of play to take back the lead at 11-10, however, it would be the last time the Pioneers would be ahead in the game.

Ricardo Hill Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished off a 14-4 UVa-Wise run and put the Cavs up by nine at 24-15 with 12 minutes to go in the half. UVa-Wise took its largest lead of the game just moments later when freshman forward
Yesid Mosquera-Perea (Quibdó, Chocó, Colombia) hit back-to-back treys to give the Cavs a 12-point, 32-20 lead with 9:47 remaining in the opening half.
With UVa-Wise leading by 12 once again at 38-26 with 6:50 left in the half, the Pioneers went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes of play to cut the lead down to two with just under five minutes to go. The Cavs responded nicely by getting a pair of baskets and making a couple of defensive stops. UVa-Wise took a six-point, 49-43 lead into the locker room after shooting 54 percent (20-of-37) in the opening half, including going 8-for-16 from outside. Redshirt sophomore forward
Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil) had 13 points in the first half to lead the Cavs. Glenville State shot 52 percent (16-of-31) in the first 20 minutes of play and was also 50 percent (6-of-12) from downtown.
After a little over two minutes of play in the second half, the Pioneers made it a one-point game with a conventional 3-point play from Terry Davis Jr. Glenville State stayed within one or two possessions of UVa-Wise before the Cavs held the Pioneers scoreless for a four-minute span and scored nine unanswered points to take a 11-point lead at 68-57. UVa-Wise's run was answered with eight-straight points by Glenville State, trimming the Cavs' advantage down to three with 10 minutes remaining.
The Cavs led by eight at 81-73 with under six minutes to play but the Pioneers made consecutive layups to make it a four-point game. Freshman point guard
Michal Seals (Lancaster, Pa.) hit a huge 3-pointer with four minutes left, giving UVa-Wise a seven-point lead at 84-77. Up by just three at 86-83, Seals hit another big shot to put the Cavs ahead by five with only 37 seconds remaining. Glenville State got a quick layup from Darhius Nunn and then redshirt junior forward
Taiwo Badmus (London, England) turned the ball over on UVa-Wise's ensuing possession. Trailing by just three at 88-85 with 29 seconds left, the Pioneers had three good looks at 3-pointers after two offensive boards but could not connect. Sheffey finally corralled a defensive rebound for the Cavs and calmly knocked down two clutch foul shots with nine seconds on the clock, giving UVa-Wise a two possession lead at 90-85. A running 3-pointer by Glenville State's Nunn was off and the Pioneers threw the ball into the back court as time expired.
The Cavs shot 50 percent (17-of-34) in the second half and went 4-for-12 from beyond the arc, while holding Glenville State to 43 percent (15-of-35) shooting in the final 20 minutes of play, including 29 percent (5-of-17) from deep. Despite being outrebounded 40-32 and 14-10 on the offensive glass, UVa-Wise scored 38 points in the paint.
Sousa finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Cavs as Seals continued his excellent play as of late with 21 points, five rebounds, eight assists and no turnovers. Badmus notched 14 points and eight boards, while Sheffey scored 13 and Mosquera-Perea added 10 points and three assists off the bench. Hill Jr. tallied five points and four assists for UVa-Wise as well.
Davis Jr. scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Glenville State as Morris earned a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jalon Plummer had 20 of the Pioneers' 26 points off the bench and also collected six boards, while Brooks Ely contributed 10 points. Glenville State's Nunn finished with seven points and a game-high nine assists.
