UVa-Wise Looks to Earn Another Conference Road Win

Storylines – vs. Glenville State College

Glenville State enters into Saturday night's matchup with a 0-8 overall record and 0-5 in league play. The Pioneers opened the season hosting the Glenville State Tip-Off Classic, falling to both Slippery Rock and California Pa by an 11-point margin. Glenville began its conference slate with back-to-back games against nationally ranked West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit squads. The Pioneers now return to Glenville following an outing to Concord University on Tuesday. The Pioneers were outlasted by the Mountain Lions, 84-70, shooting 39.4 percent from the field and just 17.4 percent from beyond the arc. Averaging 74.5 points per game, Glenville is shooting 217-for-498 (43.6 percent) from the field while opponents are hitting 263-of-563 (46.7 percent) shots from the floor. Glenville has committed 110 turnovers this far this season, recording 13.8 per game with opponents totaling 83 turnovers, 10.4 per game. The Pioneers are recording 37.3 rebounds per game through the early part of the season, led by sophomore guard Brooks Ely who is averaging 5.1 rpg. Sophomore guard Darhius Nunn leads all Pioneers in scoring with 22.4 point per game on 71-for-159 (44.7 percent) shooting. Losing three starters at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, the Pioneer men return two starters in Nunn and junior guard Jon Dunmyer. Glenville was selected to finish ninth in this year's Mountain East Conference Preseason Poll after concluding last season with a 12-16 overall record, 8-14 in the Mountain East. The last meeting between the Cavaliers and the Pioneers was in the first round of the MEC Tournament where Glenville routed UVa-Wise, 84-66. The Pioneers will have two more non-conference matchups in 2017 on the road against Illinois Springfield and will return home to host Salem International to close out the year.

Men's basketball picked up its second conference loss in a close game against West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night, 71-70. The Cavaliers were unable to connect on shots from the field or the free throw line, going 23-for-71 (32.4 percent) from the floor on the night and missing nine of the team's first-half free throws. The Cavaliers also struggled from three-point range, connecting on just 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) shots from beyond the arc. A cold night of shooting for redshirt senior Taiwo Badmus still resulted in a double-double with the 6-foot-7 forward posting 15 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Michal Seals went 7-for-19 on the night, hitting 10-of-12 free throws and collecting a season-high 26 points. Badmus continues to lead the Cavaliers in scoring and rebounding, averaging 20.6 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game. Through 10 contests, the UVa-Wise men are putting up 77.0 points per game, shooting 259-for-637 (40.7 percent) from the floor. The Cavalier men will close out 2017 hosting Milligan College on Dec. 30 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
