Storylines – vs King University
King enters Tuesday's 2 p.m. tip having lost two of its last three contests, including a 76-65 loss to Belmont Abbey Saturday. The Tornado are led by Kristen Cupples who is averaging 11.6 points per game. The 5-foot-9 junior guard saw a streak of three consecutive games in double figure scoring stopped in the loss to Belmont Abbey as she netted just three points on 1-of-10 shooting. As a team, King has struggled on the road. The Tornado are winless on the road and have been outscored by an average margin of 26 points per game in hostile territory. Turnovers have been a big reason for the team's lack of success. King has turned the ball over 180 times in its first nine games of the year compared to forcing just 137 turnovers. In last year's win over UVa-Wise, King limited the Cavaliers to just 6-of-22 shooting from the 3-point line while forcing 22 turnovers. The Tornado also took advantage of the free throw line by going to the stripe 29 times in the win compared to just 11 trips for UVa-Wise. King has not won at UVa-Wise since Jan. 16, 2010 and has yet to collect a win in the Prior Center.
Despite its second highest point output of the season, UVa-Wise dropped an 84-79 decision at Lees-McRae College Saturday. Sophomore Cynita Webb poured in a career-high 21 points in the loss while freshman Bianca Lockamy chipped in 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting while adding five rebounds in 23 minutes of action. The Cavs built a 42-37 halftime lead but were unable to overcome the Bobcats 3-point shooting as the hosts made 14-of-27 shots from beyond the arc to pull off the come from behind victory. The Cavs have won just two games on the season but, both of the wins have come at the Prior Center. Most recently, Elise Clyburn's team knocked off West Virginia Wesleyan 54-47; earlier this season, the team defeated No. 24 Lincoln Memorial University 83-80 in Wise. A big reason for the team's better showing at home has been its defense; opponents are averaging over 80 points per game against UVa-Wise when the Cavs are on the road but are scoring just over 60 points a contest when visiting the Prior Center. Last season, UVa-Wise limited King to 60 points but lost 60-56 as the squad was unable to overcome 22 turnovers.
