Storylines – vs NOTRE DAME COLLEGE
Notre Dame College will attempt to go 2-0 in Mountain East Conference play for the first time since the formation of the league. The Falcons are coming off a 66-64 win at home over Concord University Saturday. First-year coach Lauren Macer's squad survived a game-winning 3-point attempt by Lindsey Overbey to post the win after Maggie King made one of two free throws down the stretch. Seina Adachi scored with under 3:30 to play to put Notre Dame up for good as she finished with a game-high 16 points and three rebounds in the league opener. Teammate Kim Cook turned in her second double-double of the year as she tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds in the win. The Falcons have had an issue on defense through the season's first four games. Opponents are shooting a league-high 48.2 percent and scoring a league-best 82.2 points per game against Notre Dame. Last year, UVa-Wise and Notre Dame split the season series; the Cavs last won in South Euclid on Nov. 24, 2014, when the team posted a 78-71 triumph.
ABOUT UVA-WISE
Saturday's fourth quarter proved to be too much to overcome as UVa-Wise dropped a 71-64 decision to Urbana University in its conference opener. The Cavs allowed 32 fourth quarter points as the Blue Knights missed just one shot in the game's final 10 minutes.
Elise Clyburn's team will need a win at Notre Dame Monday to avoid its first 0-2 start in league play since joining the MEC. UVa-Wise had had success getting to the free throw line in the early going. Thus far, UVa-Wise is averaging 30.5 free throw attempts per game but, the team is shooting just 35.3 percent from the floor. The issue was never more obvious than Saturday when the Cavs shot 46 free throws but shot 28.3 percent from the floor. Sophomore Cynita Webb has been a force inside, the Virginia Beach, Va. product leads the team and ranks second in the league in rebounding at 11.8 per game. Webb has already recorded a pair of double-doubles and is averaging 11 points a night. Freshman Judy Kaylynn Cummings has been playing well over the last two games. The 5-foot-7 guard scored 11 points in a win over nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial before scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds in her first collegiate conference game. Turnovers continue to plague Clyburn's team; entering play Monday her team is averaging 26.5 turnovers per game. In UVa-Wise's lone victory, the team turned it over 19 times and lost the points off turnovers battle by just two points. Notre Dame is forcing its opponents into over 21 turnovers per game and forced 18 more turnovers than it has committed through its first four contests. Following the game, the Cavs will have a nine day layoff before returning to league play on the road at West Virginia State on Nov. 29.
