HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - - Women's tennis fell to West Liberty University on Friday, 5-0, in the Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinal. The third-seeded Hilltoppers (8-3, 4-2) swept doubles matches and earned victories in two singles matches to outlast the sixth-seeded Cavaliers (5-10, 3-5).
The Cavs dropped all three doubles matches as sophomores Taylor Carter and Aya Melhem were upended at the top doubles spot, 8-2, by West Liberty's Maurine Oudart and Thais Mendez. At number two, senior duo Daria Tyshchenko and Serena Burgess fell 8-1 to the Hilltoppers Laura Huwe and Alaina Pauley, while junior Mackenzie Lawson and freshman Gabrielle Beville were outlasted at the No. 3 doubles position, 8-1.
UVa-Wise dropped two more singles matches before the Hilltoppers earned the win. At number three, Carter fell 6-0, 6-1 to West Liberty's Mendez while Burgess was defeated by the Hilltoppers Kate Pinchuk at the No. 4 singles position, 6-1, 6-0.
