Box Score WISE - - UVa-Wise women's tennis defeated King University on Monday, 7-2, as the Cavs held senior day for Daria Tyshchenko and Serena Burgess. The Cavaliers (5-9, 3-5) swept the Tornado in doubles and won four singles matches in the non-conference victory.
Sophomores Aya Melhem and Taylor Carter paired up at the top doubles spot, defeating Vanessa Francois and Jennifer Harr of King University, 8-3. Tyshchenko and Burgess teamed up at number two as the duo prevailed in a tough match against King's Thalia Roustand and Isla Bell, 8-5, while junior Mackenzie Lawson and freshman Gabrielle Beville won No. 3 doubles by default.
Melhem had a strong performance at No. 1 singles, earning an 8-1 victory over the Tornado's Francois. At No. 2, Carter outlasted King's Roustand, 8-4, while Lawson suffered an 8-3 setback against the Tornado's Harr at the number three spot. Burgess played a tough set at the No. 4 spot, but fell in the tiebreaker set against King's Bell, 9-8 (7-2). Junior Montana Hill overpowered the Tornado's Morgan Buchanan at the No. 5 position, 8-2, while Beville won by default at the number six spot.
Women's tennis will begin postseason play on Friday, Oct. 20, as the No. 6 seed in the 2017 MEC Women's Tennis Tournament at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center in Huntington, W. Va.
