Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Women's tennis defeated Notre Dame College 5-4 in the Cavaliers second conference matchup of the weekend. UVa-Wise (4-9, 3-5) competed in a tough contest against the Falcons (2-7, 2-6) as the Cavaliers managed to win two doubles and three singles matches on Saturday.
Sophomore Taylor Carter and junior Mackenzie Lawson paired up at No. 1 doubles as Notre Dame's Ameer Robertson and Emily Hofsess defeated the Cavs, 8-1. At No. 2, senior duo Daria Tyshchenko and Serena Burgess overpowered the Falcons' Camryn Kidd and Hannah Philippi, earning an 8-2 victory. Sophomore Aya Melhem and freshman Gabrielle Beville played at number three as they dominated Notre Dame's Laura Herrera and Taylor Bruck by a score of 8-1.
Tyshchenko played at the top singles spot for UVa-Wise against Herrera of Notre Dame. Tyshchenko competed in two tough sets but was outlasted by the Falcons' Herrera, 6-3, 6-4. Melhem suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback by Notre Dame's Hofsess at the No. 2 position, while Carter dropped her match at the No. 3 spot by a score of 6-2, 6-1. The Cavaliers would earn victories at the next three positions with Lawson defeating Notre Dame's Kidd, 6-0, 6-2 at the number four spot.  At No. 5, junior Montana Hill played a hard-fought match as she won the first set against the Falcons' Philippi, but dropped the second set tiebreaker before battling back to earn a third set tiebreaker victory, 6-1, 6-7(1-7), 7-6(7-2). At the No. 6 position, Burgess proved too strong for Bruck, defeating her opponent, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior day for women's tennis will be held on Monday, Oct. 16 as the Cavaliers host King University in the final match of the season. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
