Box Score INSTITUTE, W.Va. - - Women's tennis was outlasted by West Virginia State University, 8-1, on Friday. Seniors Daria Tyshchenko and Serena Burgess walked away with the Cavs (3-9, 2-5) only win of the day at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Taylor Carter and junior Mackenzie Lawson opened up doubles play at the No. 1 position as they suffered a 8-0 setback against West Virginia State's Kierstin Hensley and Nina Dillwald. At number two, Tyshchenko and Burgess were able to hold off the Yellow Jackets' Laura Isbey and Sydney Miller as the senior duo earned a 9-7 victory. Sophomore Aya Melhem and freshman Gabrielle Beville teamed up at the No. 3 position as they fell 8-4 in a tough battle against Kayla McKnight and Graziele Preterotto of West Virginia State.
Tyshchenko was unable to get the win at the No. 1 singles position as she was defeated by Isbey of West Virginia State. At No. 2, Melhem won three games in the first set, but was outlasted by the Yellow Jackets' Hensley, 6-3, 6-0. Carter fell 6-0, 6-2 to West Virginia State's Dillwald at number three while Lawson managed to win two games in both sets at the No. 4 spot, but would fall 6-2, 6-2 to McKnight of West Virginia State. At the No. 5 position, junior Montana Hill took the first set against West Virginia State's Nika Tadic, but fell short as Tadic earned a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory. The Yellow Jackets' Miller proved too strong for Beville at the No. 6 position as the Cavalier dropped the match 6-0, 6-0.
Cavaliers women's tennis will travel to South Euclid, Ohio to face Notre Dame College tomorrow at 2 p.m.
