WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's tennis team swept visiting Emory & Henry College 9-0 Sunday afternoon at the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. The Wasps (0-1) from the NCAA Division III Old Dominion Athletic Conference proved to be no match for the Cavaliers (2-1) as UVa-Wise gave up very few games in each set.
 
The Cavs got things started in doubles play with a pair of 8-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The tandem of sophomore Mackenzie Lawson (Wise, Va.) and junior Marti Gay (Denton, Texas) handled the Wasps' Lauren Riner and Katie Meade at the second spot. Freshman Carlysle Funk (Coeburn, Va.) made her collegiate debut when she teamed up with freshman Taylor Carter (Church Hill, Tenn.) to take down Savanna Summers and Kala Curtis of Emory & Henry at No. 3 doubles. The duo of senior Bailey Christoforatos (Fredericksburg, Va.) and junior Daria Tyshchenko (Kirovograd, Ukraine) completed the doubles sweep for UVa-Wise with an 8-1 victory over the Wasps' Liz Graham and Ana-Belen Gomez at the top position.
 
In singles play, the Cavs wasted no time in collecting dominant match wins at the No. 5, No. 1, No. 3 and No. 2 slots. Gay, Tyshchenko and freshman Aya Melhem (Rockvale, Tenn.) each earned 6-0, 6-0 wins, while Christoforatos also made quick work of her opponent with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Gay defeated Kaitlyn Sheaves of Emory & Henry at the fifth spot as Tyshchenko beat the Wasps' Graham at the top position. Melhem took down Summers of Emory & Henry at No. 2 singles and Christoforatos defeated the Wasps' Gomez at No. 3.
 
Lawson won convincingly at No. 6 singles when she topped Meade of Emory & Henry by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Carter wrapped up the afternoon and secured the 9-0 win for UVa-Wise at fourth singles, besting the Wasps' Riner, 6-3, 6-3.
 
The Cavs will have a short three days off from competition before traveling to Hickory, North Carolina, Thursday to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University at 4 p.m.
