BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise softball team has earned the fourth seed in the Mountain East Conference South Division for this weekend's 2016 MEC Softball Tournament as announced by the league office Sunday night. The Cavaliers (25-28, 15-17 MEC) will take on Shepherd University, who is the top seed in the MEC North Division, in the opening round of the conference tournament Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Held in Troutville, Virginia, at the Botetourt Sports Complex, the double-elimination tournament will feature the top four teams from the MEC South Division and the MEC North Division with play beginning Friday at 12 p.m.
University of Charleston earned the top seed in the South Division after finishing conference play with a 29-3 record while West Virginia Wesleyan finished second in the South Division, followed by Concord and UVa-Wise. Shepherd is the No. 1 seed in the North Division after posting a 24-7 record in MEC play. Wheeling Jesuit claimed the second seed in the North Division, followed by Fairmont State and Notre Dame.
The Cavs split a pair of games with the Rams (33-14, 24-7 MEC) back on April 11 in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. UVa-Wise earned a 6-0 shutout win in game two of the road doubleheader before dropping a 5-0 decision in game two.
Claiming the inaugural MEC tournament title in 2014, the Cavs are looking for their second league championship in three years. UVa-Wise went a perfect 4-0 in the 2014 tournament and has never lost a MEC tournament game.
