Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - - The strong start to McKayla Grasham's collegiate career continued Saturday as she netted four goals in UVa-Wise's 16-0 win over the University of the Cumberlands at Cumberlands' Lacrosse Complex.
The shutout victory was the first in the two-year history of the lacrosse program at UVa-Wise (1-1).
Grasham scored the opening two goals of the game to get the Cavaliers off to a quick start. Her first goal came unassisted at the 28:39 mark of the first half before finding the back of the net again 23 seconds later off an Emily Henneberry assist.
Cumberlands (2-1) struggled to generate any offense for most of the day. The Patriots posted just 11 shots as Cav goalie Melanie Reilly notched seven saves.
Rachel Cole added to UVa-Wise's early scoring frenzy by dishing out a pair of assists in less than eight minutes. The Flower Mound, Texas native hooked up with Hannah Marshall with 24:11 to play in the half before finding Sydney Steinberg for a goal with 12:42 showing on the clock.
Grasham added two more first half goals as part of a 10-goal opening half for Coach Meghan Denney's squad.
Catherina Dina added two points in the half while Cole finished her three-point half with a goal at the 4:45 mark off a Dina pass.
Leading 10-0, UVa-Wise put the game out of reach early in the second half as Cole, Steniberg and Taylor Lawton all scored before the clock reached the 13-minute mark.
In total, eight different Cavs scored as part of the 16-goal effort. Grasham added four ground balls and a pair of draw controls. Dina and Cole tied for game-high assist honors with three while Jessica Apgar caused two turnovers.
